The 15th National Brownfields Conference officially starts this afternoon with the opening plenary session in the Thomas Murphy Ballroom. Introductory remarks will be made by Sam Gaston, the past President of ICMA, Gwen Keyes Fleming, Regional Administrator of EPA Region 4, and David Lloyd, Director of U.S. EPA Office of Brownfields and Land Revitalization.

The grants are funded by the EPA’s Brownfield Assessment, Revolving Loan Fund and Cleanup (ARC). These grants are a big move by the EPA to embrace the importance and benefits of brownfields redevelopment, and they target under-served and economically challenged communities.

A highly contaminated farm property had been exposed to years of sanitary septic and industrial waste. The USEPA put this property on the National Priorities List (NPL) and thorough assessments were conducted. A cost-effective remedy was developed for the Golden Strip Septic Tank (GSST) site that effectively addressed the remediation goals, gained public acceptance and resulted in a community recreational facility that now benefits the local residents.

On April 25th, the EPA announced the 20 communities that have been selected for the brownfields area-wide planning (BF AWP) grant. Approximately $4 million in total will go to these selected communities to assist with planning for cleanup and redevelopment of brownfields properties.

Through a unique multi-agency partnership known as the Brownfield Support Team (BST) in Massachusetts, the City of Somerville (located just outside of Boston) has obtained more than $3.5 million in assessment and cleanup funds from multiple sources to advance the redevelopment of the former Kiley Barrel site, located in the heart of Union Square.

Gainesville, Georgia is home to a new green space built upon a former brownfield. The Midtown Greenway was once a railroad maintenance yard and a stretch of abandoned railroad corridor. Gainesville purchased the 11.6-acre property from CSX Transportation, Inc. in 2009. As part of their purchase agreement with the city, CSX conducted all of the site investigation and environmental remediation under oversight from the Georgia Brownfields Program.

Proctor Creek is a 10,600-acre urban watershed that funnels a mass amount of pollution from Atlanta directly into the Chattahoochee River, harming the local environment and increasing concern for public health’s safety. The Proctor Creek stream segment consists of 9 miles of impaired waters. Several local and federal agencies have recently taken notice to this area and have created mitigation plans to reduce pollution outflow and protect nearby public health.

A new day is dawning in Charlotte, North Carolina. ReVenture Park, Charlotte’s “Renewable Energy Industrial Park” is bringing together a host of innovative businesses that will create hundreds of new jobs. The redevelopment effort is reusing the property’s extensive existing infrastructure – rail and interstate access, a wastewater treatment facility, 300,000 square feet of existing industrial space, utility substations and transmission lines, and a 360-million-gallon containment pond – to create a platform for attracting renewable energy, alternative fuel and recycling projects.

One of the Mobile Workshops available at Brownfields 2011 will take you through a wildlife refuge just outside of downtown Philadelphia. The refuge, established by an act of Congress in 1972 to protect the last 200 acres of freshwater tidal marsh in Pennsylvania, has become a resting and feeding area for more than 300 species of birds, as well as fox, deer, muskrat, turtles, fish, frogs and a wide variety of wildflowers and plants.
